26 | The Scholarly Chain of Transmission

Full Episodes
Indeed, Allah and His angels send blessings upon the Prophet.
O you who have believed, ask [Allah to confer] blessing upon him and ask [Allah to grant him] peace.
Ask for blessings upon him and greet him with peace.
O Allah, send blessings, peace, and mercy upon our master Muhammad and upon his family.
The first thing you hear from me is the Hadith of Mercy.
The Hadith of Mercy is the first Hadith I heard from my teacher.
The scholar, precise critic, and knowledgeable master, Sidi Abdul Aziz Al-Musdhiq, this is his picture.
It is the first Hadith I heard from him.
He said, "My elder brother, the Hafiz Ahmad bin As-Siddiq narrated to me."
And it is the first Hadith he heard from him, and thus the chain of narration.
It’s all the first Hadith, the first Hadith.
Until the chain of narration reaches Sufyan bin Uyayna.
And the Hadith is the Hadith of Mercy, the Hadith of Abdullah bin Amr bin Al-As.
That the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him and his family, said.
The merciful ones will be shown mercy by the Most Merciful.
Have mercy on those on the earth,
and you will be shown mercy by the One in the heavens.
And in another narration, "You will be shown mercy by the One in the heavens," with the "sukun" (no vowel mark). This is the Hadith of Mercy.
The student hears it from the Sheikh,
as if he is advising him to show mercy and act according to the character of mercy.
The Sheikh shows mercy to the student, and the student shows mercy to his friends and the rest of the Ummah.
Thus, spreading the character of mercy among the people.
I grant you permission to narrate it from me with its condition.
And its condition is that this is the first Hadith you hear from me.
Afterward, I will grant you permission to narrate all the narrations I possess.
From the books of Hadith, Bukhari, Muslim, the four Sunan, and An-Nasa'i.
All the books of Hadith, I narrate them from my father,
Imam Sidi Abdul Aziz Al-Musdhiq, may Allah be pleased with him.
And from my Sheikh, the scholar Imam Sidi Abdullah bin As-Siddiq, may Allah be pleased with him.
And from other scholars as well, I grant you this permission.
The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him and his family, said:
"Indeed, Allah does not take away knowledge by snatching it from the servants,
but He takes away knowledge by taking the scholars."
Until, when no scholar remains, people will take ignorant heads as their leaders,
and they will be asked and give rulings without knowledge, leading themselves astray and misguiding others.
This noble Hadith is one of his miracles, peace and blessings be upon him,
because it reflects our situation today.
There are many who claim to have knowledge, spread across social media,
but there is little true knowledge...
This was not the case in the time of the companions, the followers, and the scholars who came after them.
Because they adhered to receiving knowledge through what is known as the chain of narration...
And I have no doubt in the mercy of our Lord, who has provided us with means
to connect with Him and with His blessed days, which are the chains of narration.
The Muhammadan Sunnah is called "the way."
The way of the Prophet must be protected from external influences and impurities.
And only the reception through the chain of narration can protect it.

This chain of narration is the chain of the Ummah, and it preserves the Islamic faith until the Day of Judgment.
The Muhammadan Ummah is distinguished by its chain of narration.
You see that the Qur'an was transmitted to us through an unbroken chain, as well as the prophetic Hadiths and sciences.
In every era, there are men who walk in the footsteps of the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, and take knowledge from him.
For this reason, the chain of narration is considered essential in knowledge.
And this chain is one of the unique characteristics of the Ummah.
There was a Western scholar named Margoliouth,
who said: "Let the Muslims boast as much as they want about their Hadith science."
Imam Ibn Sirin also said: "This knowledge is the religion, so look at from whom you take your religion."
And Imam Ibn Mubarak said: "The chain of narration is part of the religion."
If it weren’t for the chain of narration, anyone could say whatever they wanted.
That’s why when the Prophet (PBUH) said, “O Messenger of Allah, whoever writes something from me other than the Quran, let him erase it.”
They said, “O Messenger of Allah, we fear that the authentic will mix with the weak and the fabricated.”
He said to them, “O companions of Muhammad, their scholars will know the authentic from the others.”
Therefore, Allah dedicated to this nation men
who did not get distracted by children, positions, prestige, or power
except that they dedicated themselves to preserving the Sunnah of the Messenger of Allah.
And they took it through a chain of transmission from one person to another, all the way to our master, the Messenger of Allah.
All the chains of narration that have been passed down from the beginning of the chain to the end, to our master, the Messenger of Allah.
You know, the prayer we pray, it has a chain leading back to the Prophet.
We grew up in the mosque and found them praying four rak'ahs, reading Al-Fatiha and a verse.
Who did they take it from, these people?
From the group before us, and those before them from those before them.
From those before them to who?
This is the chain of narration in the nation.
Our master Imam Malik was narrating and someone asked him, "Who narrated this to you?"
He said, “Woe to you, I did not sit with the foolish ones.”
Meaning that he was narrating from one generation to the next, may Allah be pleased with him.
Therefore, knowledge is always constant. Even some scholars in the early generations prohibited writing.
Why? They said because through writing, it becomes clear who is qualified and who is not.
But we want to limit it to the skilled memorizers.
Those who take knowledge from the hearts of men and pass it on to the hearts of men.
We do not write or record.
This was the main reason for their rejection of writing the prophetic hadiths.
However, other scholars did write.
The companions, may Allah be pleased with them, documented the sayings of the Prophet (PBUH) during his lifetime and before his departure.
So, may Allah magnify him, the guide of the stars of Islam.
And the lamps that illuminate the darkness.
Those who are guided by them in the dark night of doubt.
A prayer that continues uninterrupted as long as the waves crash in the seas.
And as the pilgrim’s circle around the ancient house from every deep valley.
Episode 26
The Scholarly Chain of Transmission
We cannot comprehend the importance of the chain of narration in acquiring knowledge
unless we imagine our lives without the obligations of religion and its transactions.
And the rulings of the sacred law—how would it be?
If it were not for the scholars receiving the Islamic religion from scholars who received it from scholars who received it from scholars, a
ll the way to the companions,
and to our master Muhammad, peace be upon him and his family,
if it were not for that, we would not have known the true Islam.
As Abdullah ibn Mubarak said, the chains of narration are the lineage of books.
Each of us has a lineage.
And the lineage of books is the chain of narration.
It means you cannot say to me that this book
has such a subject
and its author is unknown.
We must know who authored it.
And what the subject is.
And whether its attribution to its author is correct.
Or if it has been attributed to someone other than its true author.
The chains of narration organized this story.
The chain of narration is the blessing of this nation.
If it were not for the chain of narration, anyone could say anything they wanted.
And if you look at the chain of narration as a scientific concept in our religion and history,
you will be amazed to find that it is an independent science.
No nation before this Muhammadan nation
had any share in this science until this nation came.
And thus, this science
has transmitted the heritage to us with honesty, sincerity, and accuracy.
The chain of narration in the Quran and in the hadith
is one of the special characteristics of the Muhammadan nation.
Indeed, praise is due to Allah, glory be to Allah.
You receive knowledge from one generation to the next.
Imagine you read from a person who was authorized by his teacher,
and his teacher was authorized by his teacher.
And so on, until you reach Imam Bukhari, all through the connected chain, from him to him to him to Imam Bukhari.
The Almighty, blessed and exalted be He, cut off all arguments.
Why?
Because of what the early generations did.
The matter is not simply a matter of so-and-so said this from so-and-so, no.
O Allah, our Lord, gather us in his group and under his banner.
And grant us to drink from his cup and benefit us with his love. Ameen, O Lord of the worlds...
If you ask many of the self-proclaimed scholars and modern-day preachers,
"Who is the source of your knowledge in this science?" you will find that they speak about a book they read or a sheikh they watched in a video.
But this sheikh has no chain of narration connecting him to our master Muhammad, peace be upon him.
And the disconnection of knowledge from our master Muhammad, peace be upon him,
cuts off its blessing, and this shows in the spread of ignorance about the correct religion in this era.
Our current calamity
The greatest calamity that has afflicted the Islamic world today
is the disconnection of the chain of narration.
And with the disconnection of the chain of narration came denial.
It came from denial of the heritage, the rejection of the heritage.
Therefore, when someone says to you, "Well, now the Sunnah is present, and everything is available.
We just open the books, read, and do it,"
as many young people have done, becoming famous and calling to Allah,
but when you look at their CV, their background, their list of ijtihad and learning, you find they don't have a single sheikh.
They have no teacher who taught them this.
This is a denial in all sciences.
No one can enter any science, whether worldly or religious,
and have no teacher, no guide, no mentor who preceded them in knowledge
and is greater than them, giving them the essence and secrets of knowledge.
And giving them summaries, giving them guidance.
What they are doing is abandoning the greatest guide to the truth.
(And whoever Allah misguides, you will never find for him a guiding friend). Those whom Allah misguides
means that the sign of misguidance is that you find no teacher for them.
We are the cause of our problems today.
One reads and browses as they wish, and you find them giving fatwas in all kinds of ways.
But the scholar, you must sit before him, on your knees, and learn from him.
All knowledge other than the Quran is a distraction, except for hadith and jurisprudence in religion.
True knowledge is what says, "He told us," and everything else is the whispers of the devils.
We used to oppose the human method and start reading from a book.
We would work as the one who was reading in Tadhkira Dawood's medical book.
He would read that if a person got a certain illness, take black seed,
put it in their mouth, and they will be healed. The black seed is known as "habbat al-baraka."
So, after browsing the book, he read "black snake" instead.
He then told the one asking, "You bring a black snake, meaning a viper,
and then put it in their mouth, and Insha'Allah, everything will be fine."
And the situation was settled. Alhamdulillah.
But the person died because he was reading from the book.
The manifestations of extremism, terrorism, and the permissibility of killing Muslims
came from individuals who claimed knowledge,
but in reality, they took it without guidance from true scholars,
who explain the meanings and clarify what is hidden from them.
Any knowledge that causes its holder to misjudge Muslims and declare them as non-believers
is knowledge without support, because it is without the blessing of our master Muhammad (peace be upon him).
If you want to reach our master, the Messenger of Allah (PBUH),
through his words, you must go to the people of hadith.
The people of hadith are the companions of our Messenger in this era.
If you want the state of our Messenger (peace be upon him),
then you must go to the trained preachers who inherited the light of the station of Ihsan.
Generation after generation, passing it down to our master, the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him).
Just as you listen to the hadith of the Messenger of Allah with an unbroken chain,
you must also see the character of the Messenger of Allah with an unbroken chain.
You must live the state of our Messenger with an unbroken chain.
So, it is passed down from expert to expert to expert
until it reaches the Beloved, the chosen one, the Beloved of the Lord, the Almighty.
Today, the word "fingerprint" is used in the world.
If we want the Muhammadan fingerprint, the original version of Islam, we must go through the knowledge of the chain.
If we lose the chain, we lose the original version.
Today, we have faded copies.
The media and the outlets have brought us copies of extremism and rigidity,
extreme on the right and extreme on the left.
If we want to preserve moderation,
the encompassing balance,
the religion as it was revealed,
the religion in its original form, we must have the chain.
Pray as you have seen me pray.
Take your pilgrimage rituals from me.
This is the chain in Islam.
The chain in faith.
The chain in Ihsan.
Little by little, the person progresses in their prayer with the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him),
so that they are supported by words, supported by actions, and supported by states.
The chain, as they say briefly, contains the support.
If a person wants blessings and success in knowledge, they must acquire the chain.
O Allah, send blessings upon our master and our lord Muhammad, the Prophet of judgment and wisdom,
the shining lantern, the one with the great character,
and the seal of the messengers, the one with the miraculous ascent.
And upon his family, his companions, and his followers, those who walk on his straight path.
So ask the people of knowledge if you do not know.
Therefore, those who read from a book go astray.
If reading from a book were sufficient,
the matter would have been easy, and we wouldn’t need
all this noise, the chains, and the methodology.
It would have been as if Allah had revealed the Quran and placed it in the middle of Tahrir Square,
and there would be no need for the Messenger of Allah to come.
The Quran would open itself,
and its pages would be made in such a way that no air, dust, or water could affect it.
And no one would be able to tear or steal it. It would remain the proof of Allah on Earth, the Quran and the Sunnah.
If Allah wanted to place a Sunnah, He could do so without anyone.
And this would be the way of learning from books.
But those who want the truth, Allah places guidance in their hearts for understanding.
Allah is capable of doing all this, but this is not His will.
The information in books helps, of course,
but if you don’t sit with the people of knowledge, you will not acquire anything.
The first model, if Allah had wanted, was that He could have sent a book from the sky, right?
He could have sent His book down, and we could read it and live by it.
But no.
He sent a man from among us, from our nature.
Indeed, there has come to you a messenger from among yourselves.
We must distinguish between memorization and acquisition, and understanding.
Not everyone who reads understands the intended meaning.
This is where doubts and issues arose.
Everyone deals with the religious sources as they wish.
O Allah, send blessings and peace upon our master Muhammad, the opener of what has been closed, and the seal of what has passed, the helper of the truth with the truth.
And the guide to Your straight path, and upon his family and companions, according to his great worth and value.
Allah, the Almighty.
praising him a caller to Allah by His permission and a radiant light
O Allah, make us among those who follow His law, characterized by His love.
Guided by His guidance and His way of life.
Take us in death following His way and do not deny us the blessing of His intercession.
And gather us among His followers, the shining ones, His earliest companions, and the people of the right hand, O Most Merciful of the merciful.
It is essential to establish the chain of learning.
The gradual acquisition from the heirs.
From those authorized and calling to Allah by His permission.
The one who calls you to Allah by His permission, meaning through a chain.
Taking from his teacher, from his teacher, 45 men to the Messenger of Allah.
The person who deals with this way and this mistake certainly has not followed the chain.
Therefore, this is the essence of mistakes; we have not followed the continuous chain in upbringing.
What they call in summaries, from chest to chest.
It means being raised by one, learning, and loving.
He took from another, learned, and loved.
Thus, the love and proper learning continues in the chain of the Sunnah.
This is what inherits these noble meanings of following and guidance.
But chaotic following or superficial following,
this leads us to take the Prophet's Sunnah in a crippled way.
Two groups came with claims, and when you see them at first glance, you find them
completely divided, with no relation to each other.
But if you reflect, you find that they lead to the same result.
The first group are those who want to rid themselves of religiosity and identities and are astonished by it.
And there are others whom we have been tested with as well.
Those who adorn themselves with the dress of Islam.
And they wear the clothing of Islam.
And they call out with the call of Islam.
But they say, "Leave aside that which came
after the time of the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him."
This is all a recognition and reference to the Book and the Sunnah.
In the end, you find that those who belong to this call, neither the first nor the second, lead to one thing:
The desire to rid themselves of heritage and break the chain.
Our Lord intended to send a Messenger.
And this Messenger conveys to the Companions, and the Companions convey to the Tabi‘in.
Then, in the end of times, a group comes
that changes all of this, and after them, there will be successors who have lost
lost the methodology, lost the chain of transmission
lost the light passed down in the chain
lost the methodology of the Prophet, his Sunnah, and his way of learning
by us taking one from another
and not just snatching books
that are only understood with a teacher.
Thus, the educational matter always
requires a teacher, a methodology, and a book—three things.
They took the book and left the methodology, which is how to understand the text
and left the teacher who originally set the methodology.
What happens when someone says, "The Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him," without a chain?
It’s as if a foundling, a "laqit," picks up a narration and narrates it.
His narration is disconnected, but the one who narrates, like in the case of Sahih al-Bukhari,
says, "The Messenger of Allah," knowing that he heard this narration from his teacher.
This is a connected chain.
we are now in an academic study of Islamic sciences.
Only now is Al-Azhar Mosque left, or Al-Qarawiyyin, or some institutions in the East,
and those who narrate the books of Hadith and the books of Sunnah
in this old, traditional manner from the teachers.
This was the way of the past,
which graduated and benefited the Ummah greatly and blessedly.
Because the old method was how to obtain the diploma
for a doctorate or master's, no more.
But the essence or spirit, which we feel, is the blessing, the barakah, which is absent.
For example, now we are in the university, a brother teaches the sciences of Hadith, but if you ask him, he has no chain.
He studied notes and took notes from his professor, and his professor from his teacher,
and so on. The notes are printed and sold, but there is no chain.
Have you heard the basic Hadith, the Hadith of mercy?
Have you heard it? They don't even know what the primary means.
What does this mean?
This is something contrary to what our righteous predecessors were upon.
That is why their knowledge does not bear fruit and does not produce.
O Allah, send blessings upon the one who gives drink to people from the pond.
O Allah, send blessings upon the one who holds the banner of praise.
O Allah, send blessings upon the one who rolls up his sleeves for the utmost effort.
O Allah, send blessings upon the one who strives in Your pleasure with all his might...
We previously spoke about the continued blessing of our Master Muhammad, peace be upon him and his family,
in everything related to him and those who are connected to him.
The absence of this connection with those who are connected to him, peace be upon him,
results in a loss of blessing in various aspects of life, including knowledge.
Some people laugh with mockery
and say, "I’m free, I’ll just sit and wait for someone to say to me, 'So-and-so told me from so-and-so from so-and-so.'"
What value do these chains have?
They don’t realize that those we mention have been recorded by history
in the pages of the Sunnah, so their lives remain. When they are mentioned, mercy descends.
I narrate the Hadith of the righteous and their names.
So by mentioning them, blessings descend.
And by mentioning their traces, you receive their blessings... and visit their graves when they pass away.
This is a way of immortalizing their memory, of eternalizing their mention.
Our Master, the Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him, never placed his name in anything except that he blessed it.
So, by simply mentioning the end of the chain with the name of our Master, the Prophet, peace be upon him, there is this blessing.
The blessing is continuous from the beginning of the chain, which starts with our Master, the Prophet, peace be upon him,
and from its end because at the end, you mention and return it to our Master, the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him.
Why were the righteous predecessors preferred over those who came after them?
They said because the rewards of the predecessors are multiplied. For example, the work I am doing now
with a Hadith narrated by Imam Malik with his chain of transmission,
my work, when it reaches Imam Malik, may reach a hundred times more reward.
Because the Prophet, peace be upon him, said,
“Whoever introduces a good Sunnah in Islam, for him is its reward and the reward of those who act upon it after him,”
without diminishing their rewards in any way.
Similarly, whoever teaches someone something,
every time it is read, they will receive the reward of it, the same reward as the one who learned it. And so, these predecessors
were preferred over us because their rewards are multiplied.
So Allah, Blessed and Exalted, gave them from the blessings,
and provided them with both physical and spiritual sustenance, as He knows best.
When you mention them,
when you mention them, mercy descends, it is not just a mention.
You, SubhanAllah, mercy descends in it.
Also, when you say that the knowledge you received has a chain, it has a connection,
and hold fast to the rope of Allah all together and do not be divided.
Why is this rope called the "rope"? Hold fast to the rope of Allah and it will elevate you.
The permission (Ijazah) was initially about what was required.
It was for the sheikh to grant permission to his student in knowledge.
Because in the early times, in the first four centuries of the Hijrah,
we used to search for the men, accepting or rejecting the reports.
For example, I must see if this man
narrated from his sheikh or if there is a gap in the chain?
And is this man trustworthy or not?
This is what we call the "Ijazah of narration."
So, in the "Ijazah of narration,"
we had to look into the narrator and his state.
But once all the books and all the Sunnah were recorded in the honored books,
we no longer needed to search for the narrator, and the permission of narration
became a form of blessing, not teaching. They would say, "I grant you permission in this,"
as a blessing through the chain.
It is as if you met the one who met the one who met the Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him,
or you shook hands with the one who shook hands with the one who shook hands with the Prophet, peace be upon him.
The chain has light and blessings — the blessing of the Muhammadan gaze.
That you looked at someone who looked at someone who looked at someone who looked at the Prophet, peace be upon him.
Or the opposite: someone looked at you who looked at someone who looked at the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him.
This chain of transmission is a blessing for the ummah.
The one who receives the Ijazah from the people of Hadith carries the blessing of these chains.
It’s not just a matter of reading the biography of the Prophet, peace be upon him,
even the books, but reading from whom?
You may study the biography of the Prophet, peace be upon him,
and indeed find someone mentioning it just as you read it,
but you feel another kind of sweetness.
For example, this is like the Quran,
Where this sheikh explains the Quran, Sheikh Al-Shaarawy, may Allah have mercy on him.
You might hear about many explanations of the Quran,
but when you hear from Sheikh Al-Shaarawy, you hear something else.
A whole different world, because your connection with the Quran is a connection with your Lord.
You can speak as much as your connection with your Lord allows.
And you speak as much as your connection with the Prophet, peace be upon him, allows.
How strong is your attachment to the Prophet, peace be upon him?
So we’re not just searching for his description
or his character or biography, but hearing from whom?
From whom do we hear it? From who? Who has tasted the sweetest, the most beautiful, and so on?
Those we try to strive to and hope for Allah’s success in this matter,
is to revive this chain in everything.
Reviving these symbols, these truths, and these foundations,
in everything. This is what we strive for and seek.
And Allah, the Exalted, is the One who guides to the right path.
The aim is to make it alive in us, this spiritual leadership, as it was conveyed to us.
In every field and in every book, we search for its chain and its connection.
It’s not just for blessing. If it were only for the blessing of that chain, it would have been good.
But it’s not just for blessing; there is something behind it.
It is the transmission of these fresh, vibrant fruits, with their feelings, their truths, and their spirits.
O Allah, make Your blessings, mercy, and grace upon the master of the messengers,
the Imam of the righteous, the Seal of the Prophets, our Master Muhammad, Your servant and Messenger.
Imam of good, leader of the good, and the Messenger of mercy.
I grant you permission and I permit you with the book Dalail al-Khayrat and Shawariq al-Anwar.
From the Imam, the friend of Allah, the Qutb, Sayyidi Al-Jazouli, may Allah be pleased with him.
I ask Allah, the Almighty, to benefit you all through it.
And to benefit you through sending blessings upon the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him.
And to return to you the secrets and blessings
and the lights and divine breaths, and that it may envelop you with its goodness...
Would you allow us to promote this knowledge?
If you need my permission, I grant it for sharing.
I extend the same permission to you.
You have my consent to share and promote it, whether live or otherwise.
What I have said to you, you will be rewarded for.
And spread it, and I ask Allah to benefit by it.
Taking knowledge from the scholars who took it
from those who took it from scholars,
through the chain of narration that connects them
to our Master Muhammad, peace be upon him and his family.
This is the only correct path to ensure true knowledge of him, peace be upon him and his family,
and thus the sincerity of love for him, the correctness of following him, and the proper manners with him, peace be upon him.
This qualifies us to be able to support him in this time,
in a way that pleases Allah, the Exalted, and pleases His Messenger, peace be upon him and his family.
This will be the topic of our next episode, God willing
We invoked Salawat on the Prophet (peace be upon him) more than 173 times in this episode.
